In the evolving world of digital design, the line between imagination and reality continues to blur—especially with the rise of AI generative tools like Adobe Photoshop’s Generative Fill. These powerful tools unlock new possibilities for creating captivating content used in storytelling, branding, editorial, and marketing campaigns.
This post showcases one such example: using original photography of underwater scenes, I explored how generative AI can introduce surreal visual elements while preserving the integrity of the original image. The result is a series of dreamlike visuals where organic reality meets digital imagination.

From Observation to Imagination
This project originates from a real-life encounter with the algae bloom in Ottawa’s Rideau Canal, which I documented in a published letter to the Ottawa Citizen. While many viewed the phenomenon as unsightly, I saw inspiration in the abstract, reflective beauty of its underwater textures.
In my letter, I wrote about how the aquatic landscape transformed into what felt like an “algae galaxy,” with green and yellow gaseous-like shapes glowing beneath the surface. These moments later served as the creative seed for this AI-generated sea creature series.
